With the encouragement of a powerful businessman and the training of Mameha, Hatsumomo's rival, Chiyo works to become hte most popular Geisha in Kyoto. But while the Geisha lifestyle entitles her to glamour and respect, it is threatened by the swiftly changing culture of Japan, and denies her the one man she truely loves.

Review: This is an extremely well written book. It beautifully merges a captivating fictional story with histoy and fact. I read this book in two days. I could have done it in one but the book store closed when I had about 40 pages left. Every time it seemed the story was hitting a nice stopping point something happened to drag me back into the story. Perhaps the best part is how Aurthur Golden beaks down the stereotypes associated with Geisha. It wasn't until the end of the book, when I was reading the author's notes, that I realized I wasn't reading a non-fiction book. I would recommend this book to anyone, but particularly those interested in the culture of Japan.
