Review: I love this book, short, sweet, and to the point. It had severl tips that I had never heard of before, and that's saying something. My roommate's parents keep a compost pile and she mentioned that it smelled bad. At first I thought her parents were adding forbidden items to the pile, like meat. But after reading this book I came across an even more likely solution. A compost pile should be aerated regularly with a pitchfork to prevent anerobic bacteria from building up. I mentioned this to her and she agreed that her parents never aerate the pile.
This book truly is a gem. Each section has different colored text on the margin for easy flip-through. Many of the techniques will benefit me, despite my limited gardening space. In fact I'm looking forward to implementing several ideas on my porch. I was especially impressed with the low-cost suggestions. Like how to build a compost bin from materials that you may be able to get for free at a building supplier, or using old nylons to support plants with delicate stems. It also includes several techniques for extending the growing season, and suggestions on how to cultivate hardy plants in the winter.
I would recommend this book to anyone just beginning with gardening. The tips on preseving vegetables are wonderful, and the length will allow someone to quickly implement the suggestions. This book is a must-have for gardeners.
